The Masters
Masters Updates
The Masters Tournament, also known as The Masters, is one of the four major championships in professional golf.
Scheduled for the first full week of April, it is the first of the majors to be played each year. Unlike the other major championships, the Masters is held each year at the same location, Augusta National Golf Club, a private golf club in the city of Augusta, Georgia, USA.
The Masters was started by Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones who designed Augusta National with course architect Alister MacKenzie. It is an invitation-only event which results in a smaller number of competitors than the other major championships.
The course was built between 1931 and 1933. The first "Augusta National Invitation" Tournament, as the Masters was originally known, began on March 22, 1934, and was won by Horton Smith. The present name was adopted in 1939.
Masters Tickets
Tournament Tickets or "Series Badges" for the Thursday through Sunday days of the Masters are extremely difficult to obtain. Tickets are only sold to those on a patron list which was closed due to demand in 1972. Waiting lists are opened occasionally for those wanting to get on the Patron List. The last waiting list opened in 2000 but is now closed.
A limited number of tickets for the Practice rounds on Monday - Wednesday are available each year. Applications must be submitted typically by early July each year for the next year's event. Tickets are randomly allocated. If your application is successful, you will be notified in September.
You can request to be added to the Practice Rounds mailing list by sending your name, address, daytime telephone number, email address and last four digits of your social security number no later than May 1 to:
