Golf Fitness

Golf is a very physical activity. The forces exerted during a golf swing can lead to problems in your back, neck, spine and elsewhere if you are not physically able to handle them. You need to have a certain level of fitness in order to be able to play golf properly. Strength and flexibility are key elements of fitness for golfers.

Stretching before playing is extremely important. Even if you are late for your tee time, you should always make time to do some stretching before you hit a ball. It will help you make fuller swings out on the course.

Golfers can use weight training to increase strength, flexibility and muscular endurance. Getting stronger and more flexible also enhances technique by allowing the golfer to assume advantageous biomechanical positions. In golf, strength must work together with flexibility. Golf is a rotary activity, so exercises emphasizing the rotating movements of the trunk and forearms are particularly important.

Swinging a weighted club is an effective technique for increasing strength and flexibility.

We are currently working on putting together a comprehensive package of health and fitness tips for golfers. This will include exercise programs for off-season, pre-season and in-season.

Foot Pain

Many Golfers suffer severe foot pain when walking the course.

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain there is. Many patients with plantar fasciitis have a heel spur on the front and bottom of their heel, but heel spurs do not cause pain. The common name is "heel spur" because it's easier to pronounce than "plantar fasciitis" and doctors are able to point to the spur on an x-ray. Causes of heel pain include poor flexibility in the calf muscles, lack of arch support, being overweight, suddenly increasing activity, and spending too much time on the feet.
